The irony of contradiction first appeared in my work many, many years ago. Having completed a pastel describing a primordial dream world that featured a giant conch sitting in a small puddle, I felt compelled to add bitter to the sweet, idyllic composition by putting a moth on the dark side of a green crystal mountain range. I dislike moths. The pastel painting of the giant conch can be seen in the Unique Gallery.
I continued to investigate the opposition of objects and thoughts, surreptitiously placed, in reality-based work. Most recently, I am looking at the curious contradictions with which we all live in a much more obvious way, but I'm using abstract images. Contradictions are now my prime subject. I have turned to our natural environment and the effects we humans exert on it. Sometimes we work in concert with nature; other times we destroy it. Sometimes it overpowers us. I am using a theme of Heaven and Earth to describe the perplexing paradox. I deliberately order the formal elements of art to reveal the complexity of that relationship and to craft harmonious compositions.
Because there is overwhelming inconsistency in our world today, I find it hard to believe anything I have not seen or heard myself. Therefore, I have gone back to the original school that looked inward, to their own minds, to find certainty. I am painting surrealscapes.
